USA Edges Canada in Junior Race Walk Match
Women, Men split men’s and women’s wins

August 14, Boston MA

The USA women and Canadian men walked to team and individual race wins, but the combined scoring trophy went to the host Team USA at the 23rd annual USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match held at East Boston Memorial Park on Sunday. While showers ended before the starting gun, conditions in the 70′s with high humidity tempered the times recorded by competitors.

The US women were led by three time match competitor Abby Dunn (Auburn, Maine), who moved strongly in the final kilometer to take the win in 25:54 ahead of early pacesetter and teammate Erica Shaver (Washington Township, Ohio) in 26:31. Following bronze medal winner and first Canadian finisher, Katelyn Ramage (British Columbia), Courtney Williams(Vassalboro, Maine) sealed the team win for the USA with her fourth place finish in 27:13. Scoring 7-5-4-3-2-1, the USA earned a 15-7 victory margin.

Fortunes were reversed in the men’s race, as Ben Thorne (British Columbia), Canadian Junior Record holder at 10,000 meters, took the lead at the gun and was never challenged; improving on his fifth place finish of 2010, his 44:13 winning time is now the fourth fastest in match history. Teammate Bruno Carriere (Quebec) gave team support by taking the silver medal ahead of first American Alejandro Chavez, and combined with sixth place finisher Kevin Gaiesky, Canada outscored the USA 13-9.

In combined scoring, the tighter USA women’s pack provided the point total to give earn a 24-20 combined score win over the guests.

Novice and all-comers races at 1, 2, and 3 kilometers conducted in conjunction with the international match. The meet is scheduled to return to Canada in the summer of 2012

Track news

Junior Development meet.

Eighteen PG track athletes aged 9-13 will begin competition today in Kamloops. Looks like they will have some nice weather as well.

Good luck to all involved.

Geoff Martinson

Geoff ran a second “B” standard time (3:37.70) in his 1500m race in Lignano, Italy Wednesday.

1    26    LEGESSE Henok    1988    SM    ETH00 ETHIOPIA    3:36.45

He has now met the criteria for selection to Canada’s World Championship team as a “rising star”. There are a couple of ways to qualify for the WC team.

1. Finish in the top 3 at Nationals and then run the “A” standard time (3:35), or
2. Finish in the top 3 at Nationals and then run two “B” standard times (3:38). This is the “rising star” category. Its not automatic like the first option and is somewhat up to the discretion of Athletics Canada as outlined below.

“RISING STAR” SELECTION PROCESS
Notwithstanding the Criteria contained in this document and its appendices, and in exceptional
circumstances, the NTC may, in its sole discretion, identify athletes/relays as ‘rising stars’ and
may select them to the World Championship team.
6.1 Eligibility Pool
The ‘Rising Star’ Eligibility Pool will consist of athletes/relays who have not competed at an IAAF
World Championships in Athletics (Senior aged) or Olympic Games and who are not otherwise
selectable (as per the Repeat Performance Schedule in Appendix B), but have minimally
achieved two (2) “B” standards between May 20th and August 6th, 2011 and finished in the Top 3
at the Selection Trials (where applicable) and beat all athletes not selected through the standard
selection process.

Geoff believes he will find out if he has made the team in the first week of August.  In any case he will be spending time in Germany doing some training before his last meet in Gent on the 30th.

G. JULY 23 practise is cancelled.
Most of the junior group would like be in Kamloops for the JD meet and few of the senior athletes would likely be coming out after the Jamboree so it is not a great inconvenience that the City informed us that our practise time was given to another event.  The Canadian Junior Football League will be hosting the Chilliwack Huskers and the Kamloops Bronco’s.

Club practises will continue till July 3oth.

H.  Junior Development Meet

The entries for the JD Meet are due on Friday the 15th.  Hopefully we have most of the entries by tonight.  If you don’t get your entries in tonight you will have to email them directly to me by Friday.
